Proposed Urban Sports Facility – Have Your Say

January 17, 2014 by Andover Town

Test Valley Borough Council is asking residents to have their say on proposals for a new urban sports facility at Smannell Road, Roman Way.

The authority has posted letters outlining the plans to all residents located within 200 metres of the site. However, as delivery of the facility is subject to planning permission and the appointment of a contractor, details of the design are yet to be agreed.

Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Councillor Ian Carr, said: “It is important that local residents have their say on proposals for the new facility. We hope this will be a fantastic facility for users and we want to make sure that the plans are sensitive to local residents.”

To submit feedback visit www.testvalley.gov.uk/consultationportal. The initial consultation period will close on 7th February 2014.

Following a review of expressions of interest, five shortlisted skate park developers have been invited to submit detailed designs by the end of January. To help inform evaluation and decisions, a user group of BMX, scooter and skateboard enthusiasts will then look at the plans and choose which they prefer at a meeting on Sunday 2nd February.

Anyone wishing to be part of the user group is asked to contact Sarah-Jane Partner on 01264 368069 or email spartner@testvalley.gov.uk. Spaces are limited and all age groups and urban sport disciplines must be represented.

Subject to planning consent it is hoped the new facility will be delivered later this year, by Summer 2014.

This is indeed a great proposal, for the kids in that area, however I must say that I proposed a similar activity for Pilgrims Way and River Way, on the large grassed area between both estates, about 18 months ago for the kids in this area.

I produced a petition even contacted Ian Carr and other members of TVBC and was invited to a meeting, where I was informed that my proposal would be reviewed in the early part of this year.

It seems now that this will not be considered, as TVBC have made their mind up that it will be in the Smannell Road / Roman Way area.

Is it that the younger residents of both estates are not worthy off a place to play, or is it that both estates are once again pushed to the back of the queue, or is it that the area is controlled by Conservative Councillors and they must have their way.

Having been involved in the skatepark at the old Andover swimming pool site I am so pleased that this skatepark has been proposed…I have made some lifelong friends through skateboarding. I am glad that the young people have finally have a chance to pursue their passions without being moved on by the powers that be…..I hope this project goes ahead….these young people deserve a place local and close to amenities
