Clients from leading disability charity Enham Trust, many of whom use wheelchairs and had never ridden a bicycle before, recently took part in an accessible bicycle trial.
Arranged by Enham Trust’s therapy partners Hobbs Rehabilitation, with UK-wide Company Quest88 All Ability Cycling, at the charity’s home estate in Enham Alamein, near Andover, the trial enabled the charity’s clients to exercise and experience bike-riding for the very first time!
28 year old Hamish, who has Cerebral Palsy and has been at Enham Trust for eight years, enjoyed riding the bikes so much, he can see himself taking it up as a regular pastime.
“It’s marvellous,” Hamish commented during the trial. “I would do it every day!”
Enham Trust supports over 7,500 disabled and disadvantaged people across the country to live lives of choice, gaining greater independence in every aspect of their lives; Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy standing at the forefront of this work, as clients are supported to optimise mobility, increasing their ability to undertake daily living activities.
“The adapted bikes provide a life changing experience for people who have often never had the chance to ride a bike,” explained Hobbs Physiotherapist Helen Foster. “They provide a unique opportunity to increase strength of muscles, range of movement of joints and improve cardiovascular fitness. Ultimately improving their health and wellbeing whilst having fun and socialising. As the Hobbs therapy team, we encourage the people we work with to make the most of their abilities in all areas of their life.”
Hobbs Rehabilitation is an independent provider of neurological rehabilitation services. Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists provide specialist inpatient and outpatient neurological rehabilitation.
