Andover Town Band Seeks Hidden Talent

June 10, 2014 by Andover Town

Andover Town Band is looking for extra players to strengthen its team. After its most successful year yet since it reformed in 2010, the band won its second promotion in March – and is now in the Second Section – while in January the youth band collected a sideboard full of trophies at the Wessex youth and training band contest.

The recent charity concert at St Mary’s Church with Builth Wells Male Voice Choir, organised by Andover Rotary Club was a sell-out success and the band are currently preparing for a busy programme of fetes and carnivals before a summer trip to Germany.

However, some of the band’s talented young people are leaving Andover this Autumn, off to university or starting their careers. So the band has vacancies for trombone, flugel horn, cornet and percussion players.
Steve Large, Andover Town Band musical director said:

“As a band we’re proud of the opportunities we can provide for players, no matter what their ability. Some of our members only picked up an instrument for the first time three years ago and already have won contest trophies. So we’re always looking for beginners who are keen to learn a brass instrument. But we would also welcome experienced players, young or old.”

“Perhaps you used to play, but are a bit rusty. Maybe you’re new to the area and would like to join a friendly group of musicians. Perhaps you would play but need to borrow an instrument. We can certainly help there. You don’t need anything except a readiness to join in!I f you’d like to watch before you decide whether to join in, that’s fine too!”

“We’d be keen to welcome percussionists, cornet players, trombonists and a flugel player to strengthen our team and to replace two or three of our young people who are leaving the area. We rehearse every Thursday evening (Youth from 6.30, Community Band from 7.30) at Mitutoyo in West Portway (just off the Weyhill Road).”

For more information, contact Steve Large on 01264 324056.
