This article does not surprise me at all. The Breeze is becoming tedious to listen to and does little now to promote Andover and interact with its residents. I loved Andover Sound when it first started broadcasting, it was fresh, local, featured comprehensive local news and features and really made you feel part of Andover when you listened in. When the radio station was taken over and rebranded The Breeze, I knew it was the end of a local feel and the station would become the same as all the others featuring tiny snippets of local news & travel read by people that know nothing about Andover nor care about our town I dare say. I am one of the many that have switched off. I now prefer BBC radio 2. It’s such a shame and a wasted opportunity, the Breeze pretends to be local and is broadcasted from either Basingstoke or Southampton. A con. Andover is a town BIG on community and good honest people, once again we have been let down by greedy big business that care very little other than pound signs.

I have been a life long fan of radio. As a very small child I can remember the excitement generated by Caroline and Big L and the enjoyment of listening to Radio Luxembourg despite the signal fading in and out. Radio was fun, entertaining and compelling listening. Today, apart from the popular BBC Radio programs, it is boring, predictable and lacking personality.

Personally, I find the Breeze Andover robotic and amateurish and like many other local radio stations mind numbingly boring. It delivers zero value (to me at least) in terms of knowledge or entertainment. I appreciate that some people do like local radio and it is part of their day and I respect that, but as the article suggests, such people are in decline and unless there is change, the days of local radio in its current form are numbered.

So what’s next? It has to be digital doesn’t it. With 4G wireless already being deployed, 5G on the way. Pretty soon we will be able to receive personalised, localised, music, information, entertainment and presentation through our phone, tablet, laptop, computer and TV. This platform will pave the way for innovation which will totally disrupt radio as we know it, Unfortunately, local radio will be the first to go and I for one couldn’t give a damn. I can foresee a time in the not to distant future where the breeze will blow itself out. Bring on the hurricane.

Oh how I’d love to have the Emperor Rosko or Wolfman Jack present music that suited my mood, telling me about things that are relevant or of interest to me and be available 24 X 7. In a digital world it’s all feasible, so bring it on.
