Aron Smith has taken his first pole position ahead of the next Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) rounds at Thruxton Race Circuit tomorrow, Sunday 10th May.
With a best lap time just 2/100ths of a second ahead of Gordon Shedden and 7/100ths ahead of Matt Neal, the former Renault UK Clio Cup driver managed to squeeze his Team BMR Volkswagen CC ahead of the two flying Hondas in a qualifying session that saw two accidents and number of fastest laps removed for track limits infringements.
The first accident involved Simon Belcher’s Toyota Avensis and Mike Bushell’s Ford Focus, with Bushell ending up in Southampton hospital with a suspected broken left femur after hitting the barrier at some speed near the pitlane.
The second stoppage was due to Hunter Abbott’s Audi A4 leaving the track which left only 7 minutes of track time but that didn’t slow down Smith and his charging VW who put in his blistering 1:16.785 lap.
Tomorrow starts at 9:50am with a Pit Lane Walkabout / Autograph Session then racing starts at 10:45am with the MSA Formula Championship and the big event, the BTCC, getting underway at 12:12pm with rounds 7, 8 and 9 of the championship.
Spectators will be able to keep updated with all the action from around the circuit for the British Touring Car Championship race meeting. Two big screens will be positioned at the chicane (Campbell, Cobb and Seagrave section of corners) and the club chicane (at the end of the lap).
