Parents gathered outside Vigo School earlier today (Wednesday 3rd June) to raise awareness of the concerns they have over the crossing outside the school and try to encourage Hampshire County Council to progress the issue.
As initially reported on Mums in the Know Andover, the regular “Lollipop Lady” is currently away and whilst they have a replacement “Lollipop Man”, he is only able to cover the morning session for the next two weeks, leaving the parents to take their chances with the traffic in the busy Vigo Road.
Jim Crook, the current “Lollipop Man,” said that speed is an issue especially for the later part of his morning duty.
“Around 8:50am is more of a problem, possibly due to people running late. The earlier time seems more relaxed” he said.
Jim also confirmed that he’d almost been hit by an impatient driver on Monday whilst already stood in the road.
Speed was highlighted towards the end of his morning session when a black jeep type vehicle approached from the town centre end of Vigo Road and turned left into Colenzo Drive almost putting the vehicle onto 3 wheels.
Hampshire County Councillor Tim Rolt said that research is being done with various solutions being investigated and is expecting an update within the next two weeks. Test Valley Borough Councillor Iris Andersen also confirmed that speed is often an issue in Vigo Road and has been working on this.
Also being looked into is the secondary exit a short distance away from the main entrance with the school being enlarged and due to take on extra pupils in September.
