Harrow Way Student Wins Competition in Aid of Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity

March 4, 2015 by Andover Town

Harrow Way Community School Year 8 student Maddie Bowman has won a competition open to all schools in North Hampshire to design a title page for a book created in aid of Rainbow Trust, a charity which supports families caring for a life threatened or terminally ill child.

The concierge-style book, ‘North Hampshire’s Little Gems’ was created by a group of local people supporting the charity. It show-cases little-known or favourite shops, services and suppliers in North Hampshire ranging from recommended restaurants and boutiques to photographers and florists.

The competition asked pupils to design a page of the book that represented what they felt was synonymous with North Hampshire and what it means to them. Ashley Cox, PR and Communication Manager for Rainbow Trust said: “Out of all of the designs we received Maddie’s really stood out because it combined features unique to North Hampshire. It was important to the committee developing the book that children were at the heart of the purpose of the book and we are delighted to have this beautiful picture included.”

Maddie’s winning design, features a large pig’s head to depict the tradition of describing people from the county as ‘Hogs.’ Hampshire’s county flower, the dog-rose is shown in a wreath around the pig. The main body of Maddie’s picture is tiny drawings detailing the idea behind the book it’s been designed for; a little black book, full of helpful and stylish addresses. Maddie explains further: “When you look closely you can see a drawing which represents everything I could think of that might be featured in the book. Some large, yet some smaller, hidden behind other things.”

‘North Hampshire’s Little Gems’ launches on 23 April 2015 at Nutley Shoot, Nutley Manor, Hampshire and all proceeds from the book will go to Rainbow Trust, who last year provided bespoke emotional and practical support to almost 1,700 families. The charity relies almost entirely on voluntary donations and the money raised from events like this are essential in helping the charity continue the support it provides families.
