Engagement Ring Stolen in Andover Distraction Burglary

May 21, 2013 by Andover Town

Police are reminding residents to be cautious about unknown callers to their homes following a distraction burglary at an address in Andover.

Around 11am on Sunday, May 12, a man attended an address in Jellicoe Court. He asked the occupant to see a wedding photo, which she got from a separate room. When the man left, the woman discovered her engagement ring was missing.

The man had previously visited the address a few weeks before to cut down a tree.

The man is described as:

  • Large, well built
  • About 5ft 6ins
  • Podgy face
  • Clean shaven
  • Close shaven hair
  • Using a large yellow/orange vehicle

PC Rachel Cassells said: “This incident has raised the importance of checking people’s identification before allowing them into your home.

“If you are not sure about the identity of the person, do not let them in. Anyone attending your address should carry identification with them won’t mind waiting while you check with their employer if necessary.”

“Talk to your neighbours and let them know if you have had any suspicious callers or people that who are pushy and not taking no for an answer. If you have any concerns at all, please contact the police on 101.”

“Also make sure any valuables you have are stored in a safe location and out of view.”

Hampshire Constabulary offers the following advice for people in relation to distraction burglary and thefts:

  • Always use the door chain when answering the door, if you are not sure do not open the door.
  • Always check the credentials of unknown callers. Do not phone the number on the ID card, use a phone book or a bill.
  • Never employ cold-calling doorstep traders or engage with cold callers on the phone.
  • Do not keep substantial sums of money in the home.
  • Always keep front and back doors locked.
  • LOCK STOP CHAIN and CHECK – if unsure do not open the door.
  • Consider joining or setting up a No Cold Calling Zone or Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
  • Report any suspicious callers or activity to the police immediately.
  • Keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable neighbours, friends and family.

Anyone with any information should contact PC Cassells at Andover police station on 101 or call the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
