Alastair Scales, a member from Andover and District Mencap and his group of fellow dare devils completed their zip wire challenge following a 6 hour journey to Snowdonia on Sunday 19th April.
After completing a 450 metre long ‘mini’ version with a top speed of 45mph the group nervously made their way up the quarry on a very bumpy ride in an ex-military vehicle for the main challenge, the 1 mile long, 500 foot high Big Zipper with a top speed currently set at 118mph. After facing their challenge literally head on and a few faces of relieve, the group of 32 finished the day with a sense of pride and achievement and hope to have raised £5,000 for Andover and District Mencap.
Matt Martin, Fundraiser for the charity said “It was great to see so many supporters raising valuable funds for us. It was especially great to see Alastair overcome his fears and show what our charity is about which is to provide our members with choice and independence in their lives so that they live their lives to the full.”
The money will go towards the refurbishment of the computer suite at The Wellington Centre. This will provide better access to the facilities for the charity’s clients who have learning difficulties and the general community, helping people learn new computer skills and develop employment skills.
